Teesside NHS Trust contacted Tamstar after concerns were raised about ageing and damaged glazing panels on several existing cycle shelters across hospital sites in Middlesbrough and York. Over time, exposure to weather and regular use had caused deterioration in the original glazing, reducing protection and creating potential safety concerns for staff, patients, and visitors.

The objective of the project was to replace the existing glazing panels with durable, UV-resistant polycarbonate panels that would restore weather protection, improve safety, and extend the life of the shelters without requiring full structural replacement.

Tamstar carried out a full site survey and delivered a tailored refurbishment solution. The project was completed quickly and carefully to ensure that hospital operations and patient access routes remained fully operational throughout the installation.

Client Overview

Client Name: Teesside NHS Trust
Sector/Industry: Healthcare
Location: Middlesbrough & York, UK
Type of Site: Hospital campus with high daily patient, staff, and visitors
Relevant Context: Healthcare environments require reliable infrastructure and well-maintained outdoor facilities to support staff, visitors, and patients. NHS hospital sites are busy operational environments where safety, compliance, and minimal disruption are essential. The shelters on site provide important weather protection for cycle parking and pedestrian areas used throughout the day.

Hospitals such as those within the Teesside region serve large communities and provide a wide range of specialist services, meaning site infrastructure must always remain safe and operational.

The Results

The completed refurbishment significantly improved the condition, safety, and functionality of the cycle shelters across the site.

Key results included:

Improved weather protection for patients, visitors, and staff

Enhanced safety across external hospital areas

Extended service life of the existing shelter structures

Reduced ongoing maintenance requirements

No disruption to clinical services or patient access routes

By refurbishing the existing shelters rather than replacing them, the NHS Trust was able to achieve a cost-effective upgrade while maintaining continuity across the site.

The transformation clearly demonstrates the benefits of replacing ageing glazing panels with modern polycarbonate materials. The new panels provide improved clarity, durability, and weather resistance while maintaining the existing shelter framework.
